TOEFL

UNDERSTANDING THE

If you’re planning to apply for an LL.M. program, you’ll need to demonstrate your English proficiency. Most universities require the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language), while some may also accept the IELTS (International English Language Testing System).

Each school sets its own minimum score requirements — typically between 100 and 105 overall — and some also set minimum scores for each section (Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking).

Being well-prepared for the TOEFL is an important step in your LL.M. application journey, but keep in mind: it’s just one piece of the application process!

Even Advanced English Speakers Need to Practice for the TOEFL

Even if you’re fluent in English, the TOEFL has a unique format and timing structure that takes some getting used to. It’s a good idea to start with a diagnostic test or work with a tutor to assess how much preparation you’ll need, especially for the Speaking and Writing sections. The Reading and Listening sections are a bit easier to practice independently with the many free resources available online.

Section-by-Section Prep Tips

Reading & Listening

There’s plenty of free practice material for these sections.

For Reading, practice with timed exercises so you learn to manage your time effectively during the test.

In Listening, work on taking notes as you listen — but limit yourself to one sheet of paper, since that’s what you’ll have on exam day.

Writing

The TOEFL Writing section follows a specific structure, and using templates can be a great help.

The test values clarity and organization, so it’s better to keep your arguments straightforward and well-structured rather than overly complex.

Practice using transition words and organizing your paragraphs clearly to make your writing more fluid and coherent.

Speaking

Use speaking templates and build a personal list of useful linking phrases, such as in addition, however, not only that, but also, and to sum up.

Practice speaking with a timer so you stay within the time limit — going too long or too short can hurt your score.

To get comfortable with the test environment (where other test-takers will be speaking at the same time), practice with background noise, like a TV playing.

Remember, what matters most is structuring your response clearly — not the specific content of your answer.

Should You Take the TOEFL Home Edition?

Since the pandemic, the TOEFL has been available in a Home Edition format. However, it’s not always recommended, as some universities don’t accept it or may require you to retake the test later for official purposes. If possible, it’s safer to take the internet-based test at an authorized center to avoid any complications.

TOEFL updates in 2023

In July 2023, the TOEFL was updated to make the test shorter and more streamlined. While the overall structure and question types remain the same, the timing has been reduced. The good news is your preparation strategy doesn’t need to change much — the essential skills being tested are still the same.

Final Thoughts

The TOEFL is an important part of your LL.M. application, but it’s just a baseline requirement — not the deciding factor. With practice and a solid preparation strategy, you can reach your target score and focus on the other key parts of your application, like letters of recommendation, personal statements, and your professional experience.

Plan ahead, practice consistently, and go into test day with confidence!

TOEFL

Most universities require proof of English proficiency as part of the LL.M. application process, and the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is one of the most widely accepted exams. Each institution sets its own minimum score requirement, and meeting this is a crucial step for international applicants. Admissions committees consider it an essential part of evaluating your eligibility for the program.
